My grandfather, Howard Kemp, to whom I thank and dedicate everything I do at the farm to.
Steve Ballard’s love for the cattle industry began at age two, when his grandfather gave him a bred heifer of his very own. This Jersey/ Polled Hereford cross heifer not only taught Steve about hard work, but also about the value of supreme genetics. Steve grew increasingly interested in the significance of cattle genetics, until the herd he so loved was sold out so that he may attend college.

Upon graduating from The University of Alabama, Steve moved to Birmingham, AL to begin his accounting career. While in Birmingham, he met and married the love of his life, Cindy, and together they had two daughters, Marisa and Brannan.

After almost 20 years in Birmingham, Steve and his family returned to his late Grandfather’s farm in 2003 and made it their permanent home. Upon their arrival, a sign was quickly erected bearing the name of the farm Steve hoped to one day make well-known in the cattle industry: Cripple Creek Farms.

Steve made his long-time dream become a reality when he began his very own Simm/ Angus commercial cattle herd. Shortly after, however, he centered his efforts on developing a top-notch registered Simmental herd. The knowledge Steve learned in his early years about improving genetics quickly flourished into a fascination for analyzing EPD’s and herd value.

Today, Cripple Creek Farms consists of 50 registered Simmental and Simm/Angus females. CCF strives to have balanced production traits for optimal performance in growth and maternal value as reflected in the EPD excellence. The breeding program consists of females who exude various and unique combinations of performance, maternal value, growth, and EPD excellence.

Steve Ballard and Cripple Creek Farms have come a long way since 2003. When asked if he is pleased with all that he has accomplished with his herd, Steve will say, “I’m very proud… but I’m not finished yet!”
